Scotland’s victory over 21-17 victory over South Africa (which put the nation sixth in the world rankings, one place above its highest ever position) made a good day great for Birkmyre rugby club who presented with the October club of the month award at Murrayfield, moments before kick-off.

Tens of thousands of supporters at the home of Scottish Rugby joined the governing body in congratulating the club for winning the monthly gong and £1000 prize.
Secretary of the Kilmacolm club, Jamie Moglia, said: “Birkmyre are delighted to have been awarded Scottish Rugby club of the month for October.
“The award represents great recognition for the hard work carried out by the committee led tirelessly by our President Willie Carrurth and the players that have performed so well on the pitch under head coach John Black and team manager Peter Haveron.
“Receiving the award at Murrayfield was fantastic. The recent success of our mini section is something the club is very proud of and for the kids to be part of the award ceremony and have the opportunity to meet Scotland’s Al Kellock was superb – Scotland beating the world champions South Africa made complete a great day for Birkmyre and for Scottish rugby.“
Club president, Willie Carruth, added: “To take the club from a level three years ago when we were unable to field a league team on two occasions to where we are now is a fantastic achievement and has only been possible thanks to the commitment of all.
“This is not the end result; but a reminder that we need to keep pushing the bar even higher. Players are now being attracted to the club because they can see an opportunity to play and enjoy rugby at a decent standard and we want to make sure we continue to grow and to provide this service”.
The award is based on three key criteria: performance, growing the game, and discipline, and the West League Division 2 club have surpassed all expectations to take home the monthly thousand-pound prize.
Birkmyre won all three matches in the month and, at the time of the award, sat top of the league with six victories in six games after being promoted from West Division 3 last season.
As well as their on-field performance, club development carried out alongside Inverclyde development officer, Ian Forster, has earned the club serious off-the-field success.
The Kilmacolm club work hard to retain and develop the strong influx of youth membership which supports a very strong mini section and has allowed for the launch of their first ever under-15 team.
Also, in an innovative move, the club has formed partnerships with neighbouring clubs Greenock Wanderers and Paisley rugby clubs to launch the Inverclyde Youth team and bolster the growth of the game at S1 and S2 level.
Glasgow south regional representative on the Scottish Rugby Council, Bill McMurtrie, said: “It’s a thoroughly deserved honour for Birkmyre, a club who are determined to progress on all levels.
“Last season they won promotion from the lowest level of the West League, and they are now leading the second-division table. Maintain that progress for the remainder of this season, and they’ll take another step up.
“They’re also growing their junior section, as could be seen among the horde of youngsters who travelled through to Murrayfield on Saturday to collect the Club of the Month prize as well as supporting the Scotland team.”
